Greek Licensing 101: why it's cool, and why we love it!

You have seen the seal before... the Official Licensed Product seal.  Lucky for us Greeks, this seal can be found on all kinds of amazing products that we love to use; from stationery, to jewelry, to custom apparel.  These items show off our Greek pride, with style.  When shopping for our favorite sorority items, we always try to keep an eye out for the Greek Licensed seal.  But... what does it all really mean, and why is it important to us Greeks?  Well, we sat down with our friends at Affinity Marketing Consultants (the company behind the Official Licensed Product seal) for the inside scoop!

The team over at Affinity Marketing Consultants (AMC) has been so helpful in explaining the licensing process to us.  Protecting the Greek brands (oh yes, each organization is a brand... just like Starbucks!) and purchasing top-quality product sure sounds great to us!  AMC explains more, and answers all of our questions.

TSS: Explain to us, what exactly is licensing?
AMC: Licensing is the process by which an intellectual property owner can ensure the protection and growth of their intellectual property rights.  Sororities and fraternities own various trademarks (a type of intellectual property) such as; the organization’s name, nicknames, Greek letters, crest/coat-of-arms, badge, and symbols.  A trademark license is a written legal contract through which a trademark owner grants a vendor permission to use the marks.

TSS:  Why are licensing programs so important?
AMC: Terrific question!  Trademarks are a fundamental part of fraternity and sorority brands, just like the Nike “Swoosh”, Starbucks’ mermaid, or the company name “Nordstrom”.  In the case of sororities and fraternities, these marks represent each organization’s history, heritage, mission, and values.   The ways in which the marks are used have an important impact on the organization’s reputation.  Licensing programs are a way to help Greek organizations protect their marks (and reputation) through quality control and appropriate usage.  Fraternities and sororities can ensure their marks continue to serve as accurate representations of their mission and values, by monitoring the kinds of products their marks are used on.

A great way to think about licensing programs is like a recruitment process for products and services.  Recruitment is all about finding individuals who embody and reflect the organization’s fundamental virtues.  For vendors interested in the Greek market, the application process is much like the recruitment process; the products or services are evaluated for quality.  Beyond that, the license agreement terms are much like the chapter or organization bylaws; this ensures that the products are continually serving as a noble representation of the organization.  Chapters only offer and accept bids when the fit is right- and products are no different!

TSS:  How does licensing help my sorority?
AMC: As mentioned before, licensing is a way of monitoring the quality of products representing your organization.  Your organization’s ability to maintain ownership of its valuable marks and continue to provide meaningful opportunities for generations of women to come relies on a well established licensing program.  If anyone can use the marks without following certain standards, your organization risks losing ownership of the marks.  And, licensed products help generate revenue for your organization through royalties that vendors pay in exchange for the use of the marks.  Your organization uses this revenue to further support the organization’s vision and member experience.

TSS: How does having a licensed product protect the Greek community's brand?
AMC: For those within the Greek community, the differences and subtleties from group to group are well known and celebrated.  Each organization has a unique heritage and set of core principles that guide their members and link men and women geographically and across generations.  To those outside of the community, the Greek community is often viewed as more of a group of organizations that are unfortunately, largely misunderstood.  The quality control aspect of licensing is just one way the Greek community can work together to try and shift these misconceptions and benefit the community as a whole.  Quality products that contain approved images, designs, and messages can help to project a more positive image of the Greek community as a whole.

TSS:  If we find something that is cute, but the company is not licensed, what should we do?
AMC: Encourage them to become licensed!   Let them know that you really love their product, but you have a responsibility to your organization to only purchase licensed products.  You can also forward their information directly to your organization’s headquarters (or Affinity Consultants if your organization is one of our clients), and we would be happy to reach out to them and guide them through the process.    It is our interest and the interest of various Greek organizations to have products within the Greek market that meet the wants and needs of members throughout their lifetime.  The best way individual members and chapters can help is by holding each other and vendors accountable.  GreekLicensing.com is a great resource for companies to learn about the licensing process and for you to find a variety of quality licensed products and services!

There you have it... and now, we have some shopping to do with some of our favorite Greek Licensed products!  Special thank you to Selby, Dan, and the AMC team for helping put together this interview!

Transition into Autumn with Victoria

Skinny Jeans: Madewell. Skinny Frosted Pants (black): Madewell. Dress: ASOS. Two Toned Riding Boots: Tommy Hilfiger. Checkered Flannel: Urban Outfitters.

Ahhh, autumn. Like most, autumn is my favorite season of the year. Autumn brings along crisp fall air, riding boots, college football (GO DAWGS!), sweater weather, ombre foliage, and homemade apple cider. It’s the cozy season; not too hot, but not too cold, yet. However, every time fall shimmies around the corner, transitioning your summer pieces into your autumn wardrobe, whilst maintaining your sensibility, can be pretty tough! I’m not recommending that you go along wearing your bright neon floral print top with white jeans and boots (big no, no), but I do have several tips for you to mix your beloved summer fashions, with all your seasonal autumn favorites.

Transition slowly, but confidently. You don’t want to go head first in to all your thickest sweaters, and biggest circle scarves. But if you really feel like sporting something like I stated above, just be like Beyoncé, and own every part of it! In the end, that’s the best piece of fashion advice anyone could ever have. If you have a particular muted or neutral summer dress, or anything that incorporates a fall color tone (anything jewel tones, rusts, golds, coppers, orange, rich reds, or basic neutrals), it can usually be mixed with other pieces in your fall wardrobe to create a good transition outfit. Stay away from shorts once fall rolls along, you don’t want to look weather confused by matching it with a boyfriend cardigan!

Instead, go for a dress, or cute skinnies in rich colors, and be careful with prints; if any print, opt for a cute leopard print or checkered flannel. One of my favorite transitional outfits for fall is pairing a simple dress, like my black a-line t-shirt dress from ASOS, with a cute fall toned flannel, a scarf, and flats, or ankle boots. You can get the same look with switching out a dress for a cute t-shirt or blouse and skinnies!

Once the weeks start getting cooler, it is time to nix the dresses, unless you’re wearing them with some cute cable knit tights underneath. Go for lots of fun layering and mix patterns and textures! Something that makes fall fashion so unique is mimicking the way nature showcases vibrant hues, with textures like crunchy leaves, and soft grass before it’s covered by morning dew. Have fun and be daring, make your fashion stand out above the rest! Other great things to try out is putting any button down or blouse under a patterned blazer for a preppy look, or sport your sorority pride by wearing a crew neck with your letters, a button down underneath and a super cute statement necklace! This time of year also now becomes a great time to pull those adorable two-toned riding boots out from your closet.

You can never go wrong with skinnies, of course! Wearing denim leggings may not keep you warm enough in the cooler months, so a great way to make sure your jeans don’t look bulky under your boots is to cuff the bottom, put your sock over, flatten the jean out with the sock, and then put your boot on. Regular skinnies, or my favorite from Madewell called the ‘Skinny Skinny Ankle’ are perfect throughout the earlier months of fall with flats or ankle boots, and are effortless to tuck into riding boots! The jean hits at your ankle, being the smallest part of the boot, so it lies flat. Coated black denim and biker zippers are in for fall, and compliment a lot of styles-try it out!

Scarves and sweaters are going to be your best friend when the crisp air becomes slightly more frigid. Try layering a fun button up over a t-shirt, and then add a cardigan or open sweater over the button up and roll up the sleeves once or twice. Top it off with a scarf and adorable gold jewelry to make your look finished and festive, or even a cute fleece or North Face puffer vest, and you’re good to go!

Happy Autumn!

Throwback Thursday: The Sorority Secrets Video

We thought we would change it up a bit this Thursday and do a little Throw Back Thursday!  It has been roughly 8 months since we released our teaser video and we've gained quite the followers since we launched The Sorority Secrets at the end of January.  By doing a Throwback Thursday, we thought this would be a perfect way to show our new readers and followers who we are, our mission, and why we created The Sorority Secrets.

If you haven't gotten to know us, the Co-Founders, then find out about each one of us here.  It's been quite the journey and it's been amazing to see how much The Sorority Secrets has grown in so little time, but we have SO MUCH MORE for you all in the pipeline.

We want to take this time to thank you all; thank you for sharing your secret, for following us, for helping us spread the news about The Sorority Secrets, and thank you for believing in us.  Our goal is to spread the positivity of sorority women and Greek life; as well as to be the go-to site for ALL women, not just sorority women to be able to share and hear other women's secrets and recommendations.... cause some secrets are meant to be shared!

We love you all and thank you!

Photo Bulletin Boards {DIY}

As it is that time of year, our favorite time of year to be exact…recruitment time, I myself am neck deep in ribbon, rhinestones, and glitter!! “Extreme crafting” as our chapter likes to refer to it, is in full swing.  One of the biggest and most important projects that we partake in during the week of recruitment, and one of our biggest recruiting tools we utilize, are bulletin boards scattered throughout our house. These boards are a fun and charming way to give all of the beautiful Potential New Members a quick peek into the life they could soon be living. Although these boards seem like an easy task to accomplish, they are actually far from it.  This is why I wanted to share with our readers how to create the cutest and easiest boards for your chapter, dorm room, apartment, or house.

My biggest inspiration for my creations this year was Pinterest of course! Making a Pinterest board with inspiration is a necessary component to this process. I had many fun quotes and sayings on a pin board, as well as interesting visual designs compiled so I could draw inspiration at the click of a mouse…. because let's be honest, Pinterest makes us all have creative bones in our bodies.

Each of the bulletin boards at our chapter have a theme; something that our entire chapter is involved in.  This could be anything from philanthropies to bid day, or tons of different sisterhood events from the past year. You name it, we have a board for it. In previous years, we have created boards with different backgrounds and colors. This year, we chose a color scheme to make them cohesive & more appealing to the eye. Adding a flirty flower border on every board flawlessly tied the themes together. In the end, I learned these boards are a lot of work... but they can easily display the greatest events your chapter and sisters partake in over the year!

What crafts does your house like to make during recruitment season?  Share with us below!
