Fashion Friday: Independent Designers Runway Fashion Show

[1][2][3][4][5]

There is nothing like local fashion and Fashion Week is always a great time to explore the fashion that is in your city. Co Founder, Karen, had the pleasure of kicking off Bellevue Fashion Week by attending the Independent Designers Runway Fashion Show. IDRS has been going on for three years now and the point in the runway show is to showoff local designers and to award one lucky local fashion designer money to grow their business. The event was nothing short of amazing and each local designer stayed true to their style which was great to see on the runway. Karen saw mixes of spring and fall fashion pieces that she can't wait to add to her closet and show off this year and next. Karen absolutely loved LU. by Jenny Fort. LU. is very true to the Seattle earthy, grunge scene, but done in a trendy, absolutely wearable way. Karen's favorite piece from the LU. collection was this jumpsuit: super comfortable and high fashion at the same time. LU. ended up receiving second place in the runway show so kudos to Jenny Fort! Karen's second favorite local designer was Klad Apparel by Melanie Trygg. Karen loves fashion that makes sense, and every piece from Klad Apparel makes fashion sense. You can wear just about anything at any given part of the day and that's what makes Klad Apparel so appealing.

Check out more of Karen's favorite looks from the night above! For a full list of all the local Seattle/Bellevue designers click here.

Do you have any favorite local designers that we should know about? If so, then leave a comment below.

Special thanks to the Bellevue Collection; we can't wait to attend next year!

Best DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween costumes can be super expensive so we're really loving the idea of making them this year. Back in our college days, Halloween was reserved for an entire week. So for one week you recycled Halloween outfits with sisters in hopes that you weren't caught in the same costume from the party the night before (#CollegeProblems). DIY Halloween costumes usually get more attention than store bought costumes! One year Co Founder Karen painted herself into a tiger and she was turning heads. Sakura kept it simple and cute with her BFF rocking the Audrey Hepburn classic look. This year, get into the Halloween spirit by making your costume. Below are some super easy, cute, and affordable costumes you can make yourself.

Cat Woman

What you will need: A Black body suit, black eyeliner to draw on cat eyes, whiskers, nose, and lips. Add in cat ears and you're all set!

Little Mermaid

What you will need: An old bra to glue purple sequins, jewels and seashells on. Green pants, leggings, or skirt. A red wig to look like Ariel!

A Nerd

What you will need: A plain white tee, suspenders, jeans or jean shorts, Thick glasses and your hair in pigtails.

Jungle Woman

What you will need: Fake leaves from the Dollar Store and old clothing to hot glue the leaves to. Add some branches in your hair for a more jungley feel.

What are some quick & easy DIY costumes that you've created? Share with us below!

WCW: Emma Watson and Feminism

fem·i·nism
ˈfeməˌnizəm/
noun
  1. the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
    synonyms:the women's movement, the feminist movement, women's liberation,female emancipation, women's rights
    informalwomen's lib
    "a longtime advocate of feminism"

Feminism. When you hear this word what do you think? A lot of negative press has been surrounding this word and really, there is nothing negative about feminism. It brought so much joy to us when we watched Emma Watson give a speech at the UN that focused on gender equality and the He for She Campaign. Emma is the newly appointed UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador. "It's not the word that's important, it's the ambition behind it. It's time we stop defining each other for what we are not, and start defining ourselves for who we are", said Emma during her speech.

We couldn't agree more.

As business women, we are so fortunate for the opportunity to be entrepreneurs and value women in the workplace. But, it goes beyond the workplace too-it is a mindset change that needs to occur for both genders. Women should have equal rights to men and this is a message that should not only be spread by women, but by men too. Emma notes that in her speech when she states: "I want men to take up this mantle so their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too – reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned, and in doing so be a more true and complete version of themselves.”

Watch her speech above and make a conscience decision to be apart of the movement. To learn more about He For She, visit the site here.

3 Spring/Summer Weddings We Wish We Were Invited To

We have reached a point in our youth where our friends are getting married left and right! Being a guest at their weddings have been the greatest pleasure. We absolutely love seeing how all the decor and extra details come together with each wedding. Spring and Summer are total wedding seasons so it wasn't only our friends taking advantage-- our favorite celebrities did too. Oh how amazing it would have been to be invited to some of these 3 Star Celebrities' weddings. Below is a list of all the fun Spring & Summer Weddings we wish we had received a special invite to!

Kimye (Kanye + Kim)

Much to our surprise, there aren't many photos of Kim and Kanye's nuptials. Contrary to true Kardashian fashion of sharing it all, there is minimal evidence of all the details of the West wedding. All we know is what we've heard and well, a wedding in Italy really doesn't sound too bad. Judging from Kim's last wedding to Kris Humphries we can only imagine how glamorous it turned out. Kim seems to love the black and white classic wedding look and the decor made the ceremony look pure, youthful and VIP. Congrats to them!

Ashlee Simpson & Evan Ross

We are total suckers for Bohemian-style weddings and we would have expected nothing less from Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross. Despite the rain that decided to come during their wedding day in Connecticut, it really didn't seem to hinder the love in the air. With A-list celebrity guests and performers the day and night seemed to be an amazing affair!

Lauren Conrad & William Tell

If there is any wedding where we have been sitting with anticipation to even see a photo of the color flowers she used it's Lauren Conrad and William Tell's recent wedding. LC is our idol and we have been so inspired by her entrepreneurship and sense of fashion. She is literally living a dream come true and we would have loved to witness her magical day. We can only imagine what her dress looked like...stunning, of course! Lucky for us, US Weekly just unveiled pictures and details from her nuptials in their September 2014 issue. (*happy dance*)

What Spring or Summer wedding do you wish you were invited to? Share with us below! Hey, a girl can dream, right?!

Sisters Succeeding: Meghan Pearce

Meet Meghan Pearce.  She's a 5th generation Phoenician (from Scottsdale, Arizona) with a unique connection to family-- and to business.  Not only has Meghan's family lived in Arizona for 5 generations, but they also owned one of the oldest family run businesses in the state.  She was raised with the idea of working hard towards what you believe in, and going the extra mile whenever necessary.  It takes a strong family unit to run a successful business together; Meghan always valued the importance of family, in addition to a strong work ethic.  Not only does she hold herself to a high level of integrity; she's a lot of fun too.  Her warm and outgoing personality lights up a room.  Meghan found a way to utilize 3 of the things she loves most in life (entrepreneurship, family, and socializing) and tied them all together... creating her very own dream career.

Meghan attended the University of Arizona, where she joined Gamma Phi Beta.  Greek life provided her not only with lasting friendships, but also with the feeling of family while away at college.  She enjoyed holding positions such as social chair, living in the pretty "pink house" on campus (yes, their house is pink!), and loved meeting new people.  Shortly after graduation, Meghan began working at a public relations firm.  The firm marketed and put on events for the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, and the Lupus chapter of Arizona.  This was the beginning... she started to get her feet wet with nonprofits.  The feeling of gratitude that Meghan experienced after working these events left a significant impression; there was a deeper meaning.  The people, the lives, the impact it made.  Nonprofits were making a difference.  As a former social chair and a natural social butterfly, Meghan began to see the potential to connect the two.

Shortly after, Meghan began working for St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, which led to being asked to work at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation.  Once she began working at the children’s hospital, Meghan knew that her life had been forever changed.   She was both inspired & compelled to give back, witnessing first hand the challenges that families who have a child suffering from a chronic or life threatening illness endure.  The need was there; and Meghan was determined to start her own company to help them.

We sat down with Meghan, to get the scoop on how she came to be the CEO of the Pearce Family Foundation, and created the Angels Around Us grant.

1. How long have you been involved with charitable work?
I have been involved with charity work since I was a little girl. My father used to have my mom, sister and I help pick up trash on the highways every spring, which was a part of a recycling program he created. He also had us assist with passing out Thanksgiving turkeys to his employees who worked in the warehouse during the holiday season. I remember always feeling that warm and fuzzy feeling inside after hearing how grateful the employees were to be able to bring home a turkey to their family.

2. What sparked you to start your own 501(c)(3) public charity?
I spent about two years coming up with the idea, but what motivated me to start was seeing how cancer affected a family friend close to me. Their whole life was turned upside down, and the only goal they now had was to go into battle with cancer and fight with all of their might. Life doesn’t stop when you're dealing with a chronic illness. They had two battles to focus all their energy and time on; their sick child, as well as surviving day-to-day struggles. I was also getting the entrepreneurial itch instilled by my family to start my own company. My great grandfather started his company on his own-- what once was a feed and grain store turned into the only Coors beer distributorship in the Southwest after Prohibition ended. Since I could not take over the family’s company, I wanted to create my own.

3. What is your dream goal or accomplishment?
I dream of being a large foundation that not only helps families in Arizona who have a child suffering from a chronic or life threatening illness, but also being able to help families from all over the country. I hope to be able to grant more families the full grant amount every month. I want to be invited as the Pearce Family Foundation to the “Stand up to Cancer” event, as well as to be a recognizable name nationwide.

4. What are your 3 must-have beauty products?

5. What is your schedule typically like day to day?
I get up in the morning and have two things: a cup of coffee, and a mini bagel from my favorite local bagel shop (they come in a dozen to a bag, I freeze one and have one in the fridge). I check my email from my bed, drink my coffee, and watch my favorite morning show... The Today Show! I have to start my morning off with Matt Lauer and Al Roker.  I've been watching them since I was little, it's tradition.  Then, I head into my office. I am normally doing a bunch of things; checking emails, entering checks into Quickbooks, making lunch appointments (with potential nonprofits or people I hope to be working with in the future).  I also do one of my favorite things, which is sending grant applications to families who are in need of our grant, Angels Around Us.

My day is also always different.  One day I'm practicing skeet shooting (we are having a skeet shooting fundraiser in October), others I'm helping garden at St. Vincent de Paul. I love ending the day with a Zumba class and a home cooked dinner. My mom is an amazing cook... I'm trying to practice every chance I get! I think it is important to know how to make yourself a healthy meal. Going out is great, but nothing beats looking in your fridge and coming up with some type of yummy (and free) meal!

6. What are the ups & downs of being in the philanthropic industry?
There are struggles for sure.  Being a “newbie” to this industry makes it tough because no one knows who you are. There are over 30,000 nonprofits in Arizona alone, which is why you have to make yours unique and your own. I feel with my history of working at St. Joe’s and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, I have a good start with where I want to take my foundation.  It's tough, there's a lot of competition. Every foundation wants to "do good,” so you have to think outside the box and separate yours from the rest. The up side though is that you are giving back to your community and helping those in need-- no matter what, you're making a difference. When I tell people what I am doing and for who, they are so intrigued.  I can tell I'm doing something unique, it will grow more in time.

7. If you can have anyone's closet- who's would it be?
Two people; my grandmother Charlotte Pearce, and Audrey Hepburn. Both of these women grew up in a time where dressing up was necessary, whether you were going to dinner or to the grocery store. My grandmother would wear her jewels while shopping for dinner. I respect a woman who acts like every day is an affair to remember. If she was still around today, I would beg to borrow from her closet. I am lucky to have a few of her treasures.

Audrey Hepburn is the epitome of classy; I can only imagine how organized and perfect her closet must have been! Every girl loves a simple yet flattering black dress, and Audrey put that on the fashion map. The LBD is still the go-to look when you "have nothing to wear".

8. How did your collegiate sorority experience make you the person you are today?
Being involved in Gamma Phi Beta gave me the confidence I needed to be able to talk to anyone, and to hold a conversation. Recruitment was great practice for learning how to talk to strangers, and be able to get to know someone in 2-3 minutes. I feel I have a good judge of character now, and can tell whether or not someone is who he or she says they are. I enjoyed every moment of being an active. Life is meant to be spent, not saved, which is why I try to live every day to the fullest and to do things that make me happy!

9. Name 3 things in your purse that you can't live without.
  1. EOS chapstick in summer fruit
  2. My iphone5s
  3. My sunglasses {by Victoria Beckham or Karen Walter}
  4. One more- I always, always, always have a water bottle with me! I probably drink 3-4 water bottles a day :)

10. You have helped many families and children through the Angels Around Us grant. Tell us about the moments that made the biggest impact on you.
A family that inspired me to start the grant program was struggling last December with bills and life stresses. I hadn’t fully come up with the grant system, so I did not have an application or anything in place yet. My mom and I decided it was time to introduce the grant idea to friends and family by holding a holiday party.  Everyone brought a gift card for the family. They have a 15-year-old girl who has bone cancer in her arm that has come back twice. The mom has also been sick, so she was only working part time, and her husband had been having a hard time finding work. The bills were piling up, and they did not know how they were going to have a Christmas for their family. I rallied behind them, and we ended up raising about $3,000 in gift cards for the family. The mom kept saying, “why would people help us who don’t know us?" After, she looked at me and said, “what you are doing is going to change people’s lives."  Right then, I knew I was on the right path for the foundation.

Another family we just recently helped were the Acosta’s. Their truck was in the shop because they needed a new transmission. They have a son who was born without a lower jaw, and I met them when I worked at the children's hospital. The mom got in touch with me and told me what was going on.  She came to my office with her son, and filled out the grant application. She was practically in tears the entire time. She told me she was just about ready to sell all her furniture in order to pay for her transmission. I immediately pushed the application through with my committee-- I went down to Sanderson Ford [a local dealership] and paid the remaining debt for the family.

Those moments are why Angels Around Us has been created. We aim to eliminate the extra stress life throws at you. I am so grateful to have this in motion, so I can step in when I am able to and give back to Arizona families in need.

11. What is your #1 advice for people that are interested in the public charity industry?
First off, if you want to start a nonprofit-- congratulations! Giving back to our community is life changing and worth every step of the way. Find people you trust, that you can rely on to stand by your side when you need advice. Being in the nonprofit world isn’t the most glamorous occupation. You’re the one setting up your events and cleaning up at the end. That's a small price to pay when you see the reward. I would never give up or go back to any other occupation; I find happiness and peace knowing I am helping those who have no where else to turn.

This is one of my favorite quotes, it's something I believe to be very true: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth” -Muhammad Ali

This book is all about fashion and style...two things I love! Nicky gives advice using a formula she created to develop your own signature style and it's called 3-6-5. She has you consider the 3 main aspects of your lifestyle, then choose 6 staple items of clothing, and identify 5 essential accessories"
  • Nail Polish from Christian Louboutin - "Wait, Christian Louboutin has nail polish now?! I'm a sucker for red nails and have heard nothing but amazing things about this nail polish. Red is back for fall in full affect!"

6 Essie colors to have this Fall!

It's not quite Fall yet, but it sure is feeling like it.  Bring out those cozy knitted sweaters, cute suede boots, and all those beanies and scarves!  Another thing to change now that Summer is almost over is your nail color- can't be wearing bright blue, yellow, or pink this season.  It's time for some new Fall nail polish colors and Essie has the perfect Fall nail polishes for us- aren't they great?

Another great reason why we love Essie is because they don't chip as easily.  We like to change our nail polish color pretty frequently so gel or acrylic doesn't work for us!  So for the regular, basic manicure gals, Essie is the way to go!

What are some other great Fall nail polish colors?

Spicy "Cheesy" Kale Chips Recipe

Kale is all the rage! This is the perfect delicious, yet healthy snack filled with tons of flavor without gaining the extra weight! Paulding & Co. has some awesome recipes that we were happy to come across their Spicy "Cheesy" Kale Chips Recipe. It is simple to make and pretty healthy. Check out the full recipe below!

Spicy “Cheesy” Kale Chips
This recipe makes 12 oz. chips (2 one-gallon zip bags)

Ingredients
▪ 2 ½ cups of raw cashews
▪ 1 large (Holland type) red bell pepper
▪ 2-3 red Fresno peppers
▪ 1-2 tsp lemon juice (to taste)
▪ 2 tsp mineralized sea salt
▪ 2 Tbs. nutritional yeast
▪ 3 bunches curly kale

TIP: Be sure to purchase ultra-fresh organic vegetables for this. Soak the cashews in water for 3-4 hours. Combine with the stemmed and seeded peppers, lemon, salt and yeast in a blender. Puree. Taste the mixture, and if it needs it, add more salt or lemon. Strip the stems from the kale leaves-you can do this easily by holding the end of the stem in one hand, and firmly running the other hand up the sides of it, dislodging the leaf. The tough part of the stem will come off, leaving the tenderer part intact.

In a large bowl, combine the Kale with the blended mixture, using your hands (evenly) as possible distribute the mixture. Lay the leaves onto a dehydrator racks, crowding them but not stacking them. Dehydrate at 105° F for 12-16 hours, until very crisp. Store in sealed zip bags. If you don’t get them dry enough they will soften in the bag.If you don’t have a dehydrator they can be laid out on a rack or over a pan in the oven with the temperature set as low as possible. The time to dehydrate will be greatly reduced, probably to about an hour or even less.

The chips will be a tasty snack!

The Dos and Donts of Snapchat

Snapchat is one of our favorite apps for many reasons! It's the perfect way to share with your friends and family your day-to-day without feeling like you're blowing up their newsfeed. But, like most apps, Snapchat is pretty addicting. As much as you don't want to press your finger down on your friend's latest snap, you really can't help yourself. Considering how time consuming this app is, it's important to make it worthwhile so that your friends and family are viewing quality Snaps from you. Therefore, we have created a list of Dos and Donts when it comes to Snapchat.

1) Like any storyline, have a beginning, middle, and end. In other words, if you're going to Snap about your haircut, make the story of it fun. Snap yourself with your hair before and your hair after. That's much more interesting than just a picture of your new hair.

2) If you're going to snap a photo of an object, make it quick. Making a still object go for 10-15 seconds is totally unnecessary in the Snapchat world.

3) Please, no selfies all day long. Leave that for Instagram!

4) Have fun with the filters!

5) If you're trying to grow your audience, then Snap every day.

6) Keep it clean! Once the internet gets a hold of a picture of yours, there is no telling where it can end up. Although Snapchat notifies you when someone has screenshot an image you've shared, that doesn't stop them from using it.

7) Keep your Snaps different each day. Nobody wants to see every angle of your dog every minute of the day (haha!). If you can't hold back, then keep the repeat snaps for your BFFs.

What are some suggestions you have when it comes to utilizing Snapchat? Share with us below!

How To Get Through a Break Up

Getting through a break up is no easy feat, but you have to go THROUGH it before you can properly heal and move forward. Suppressing your feelings is a sure fire way to spiral into deep sadness or depression and life is too short to harbor your feelings and essentially self destruct. There is a healthier way to get through a break up and if you follow these tips, you will be on your way to emotional freedom and you'll be ready to tackle the next relationship just waiting for you!

  • Confide In a Trusted Friend
    • Feedback is so important while going through a break up. As much as it may seem easier to bottle up your emotions, hearing input from a trusted friend or someone who has also been in a relationship can offer more help than you think. No relationship is perfect and it's great to hear the perspective and advice from friends. They can offer a shoulder to cry on or words of wisdom.
  • Travel
    • Do NOT stay cooped up in your room to drown in your misery. Our thoughts are so powerful that you might find yourself suffocating in a confined space. Rather, take a trip away from it all. Whether it is a car ride with the windows down, a tropical vacation, or a fun trip to the happiest place on Earth, clear your mind so when you're ready to fully analyze the break up, your thoughts are not clouded.
  • Write Down Your Thoughts
    • If you want to make sense of your break up, write down everything that was shared between you and your ex that lead to the break up. Create bullet points so you can organize your thoughts.
  • After You Write Down Your Thoughts, Throw It Away
    • Whether you throw away your thoughts physically or figuratively, it is important to move on. Don't rehash old thoughts because it will make you nuts and resurface negative emotions. The point in writing down your thoughts is to have a better understanding of where things went wrong in hopes that history does not repeat itself.
  • Cry
    • Cry. Be human and let your body purge of the pain. Break ups can cause a lot of stress, often times not realized for a couple of days. Therefore, every second you feel like crying, allow yourself to-it's normal. The grief your body goes through after a break up is said to be in conjunction to the feeling of losing someone. Grieve; mourn the loss of the relationship and don't feel bad for doing so.
  • Smile/Laugh
    • Laughter is the best painkiller. Smiling and laughing will lift your spirits 100% of the time! Studies show that smiling and laughing improve your mood so don't hold back.
  • Listen To Upbeat Music
    • Skip the sappy love songs and opt for upbeat tunes. Listening to music is such an easy, positive, free way to both lift your spirits and temporarily relieve pain/stress.

Why I Went Greek {Ali}

Ever since I found out what a sorority was, I wanted to join one.

My love for all things Greek started in about 2001, when I was first introduced to a character named Elle Woods.  She was smart, beautiful, sassy, and looked smashing while wearing pink.  Then in 2002, my love was confirmed when I watched the show "Sorority Life" on MTV.  Does anyone remember that show?  It completely intrigued me.  What was being in a sorority all about?  Who were these people, and more importantly-- what sorority were they in?!  It boggled my mind that the Greek letters were blurred out during the entire show, and I Googled relentlessly until I could find out which organization this show was all about.  There was so much drama, there were so many twists, and I spent so many hours glued to the screen.

But that was the movies.  That was made for TV.

As I left high school, I chose to stay in-state and attend Arizona State University.  The campus looked beautiful, there were many great shops and restaurants nearby, and Mom wasn't too far of a drive either when I wanted a home-cooked meal.  Plus they had an excellent Journalism & Communication program, so I was sold.  Even though I stayed in-state, a funny thing happened... NONE of my friends from high school chose to go to ASU.  They all either chose the rival college in Arizona, or to go out of state.  Big gulp... I was a lone ranger.  I was on my own to find a new circle of friends.  There was no question; I was going through sorority recruitment.  I signed up, and went shopping for outfits to wear to recruitment immediately.

Once Bid Day rolled around, I had lunch with my Mom by campus just before the big event.  As I sat there talking to her about my experience over the past weekend, I started crying.  I fell in love with the chapter I wanted to be in, and the connections I made meant so much to me... I cried just thinking about it.  The women in this chapter were ones that I identified with, looked up to, and were in alignment with my values.  Tears of happiness, I found my home.  And a few hours later, I found out that my wish came true.

As my first few years of college flew by, I was swept away in Greek pride.  I was so proud, that I painted our sorority name in neon pink spray paint on the wall of the spare bedroom where 3 of my sisters and I lived together.  Oh, and my car had a 3 foot wide decal on the back window too (in pink, with hearts).  I got involved.  I held positions, and they forced me to take action to improve my leadership skills... and get out of my comfort zone.  As one who liked to do things typically all on their own, I learned how to delegate and trust in my sisters to help me get the job done while I was recruitment chair.  One late night while living in the house, I bonded with a new friend in my pledge class.  We laughed, we cried, and we were inseparable from that day forward.  I was there the night she met her future husband at a fraternity house.  And, she stood beside me as my Matron of Honor at my wedding 3 months ago.

And then there was that one time I got in trouble... oh boy.  Now I could leave this story out, but I'm keeping it real... this humbling event was key to my experience.  While I thought I was having an innocent party one night, it didn't exactly play out that way when I got called in the following week.  Some of the new members were at the party, and our advisors weren't too happy with me.  I was so upset with myself, I cried for days.  But you know what?  It taught me a lesson.  I learned how to better look out for my friends, my chapter... my sisters.  How, you might ask?  Because it was up to people like me to ensure the chapter I loved stayed that way; it's the older members' responsibility to guide the new members in the right direction.  Sure, we had fun.  But sisterhood to me wasn't about a party.  Often times, it was the nights hanging out on the couch that meant the most.  Suddenly, I saw the bigger picture & a lightbulb went off... it all made sense.  Once things calmed down, I realized that my sisters cared enough about me to call me out when I was doing something wrong.  I respected them for doing that.  That's exactly what happens while you're in your early 20's; you grow up.  Now I'm not suggesting to go out there and be reckless, but it's ok to make mistakes too.  Being Greek holds you accountable, and reminds you to respect the values that made you fall in love with your chapter in the first place.  Thank goodness I had my sisters by my side to experience the growing pains together.  Those 4 years wouldn't have been close to the same without them, and I can't imagine it happening any other way.  And as I continue to grow for the rest of my life, I know that they'll be right there with me for the ride.

Today, the pride I take in being Greek has taken on a new meaning... beyond any massive sticker I could place on the back of my car window.  I can say with my whole heart that choosing to go Greek is one of the most important decisions I've made in my life.  I met my bridesmaids, it challenged me as a person (and made me a better one), and I've built a career for myself out of something that I hold so dear to my heart.  It taught me to be a better friend, a better leader, and a better woman.  I even attribute my decision of going Greek to meeting my husband; if it wasn't for the people I met in my sorority, I might not have ever met him.  After graduation, being Greek takes on a whole new meaning... when you meet another woman who is also a Greek alum, it's instant common ground (same organization as you or not, it doesn't matter).  I'm fortunate that I get to stay connected to Greek life through both The Sorority Secrets, and through my company 224 Apparel as well.  Even after I've graduated, I'm able to give back to something that has given so much to me... and it gives me true joy.  I believe in sorority women.  They are among the most powerful, influential, and caring people I know.  It's an honor to be a part of such an organization, and part of a legacy of remarkable women.  I'll be forever proud to be a Greek woman, and grateful for my decision to Go Greek.

{P.S.} no TV show can capture the magic of what it's really like.  Not even close :)

Xoxo,
Ali

Why I Went Greek {Karen}

Yesterday, we highlighted why Co Founder, Sakura "went Greek" Today, find out why Co Founder, Karen "went Greek"!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My story is really unique in the sense that I knew absolutely NOTHING about sororities. I of course heard about them via movies, but didn't quite understand it.

Here is a little background on me. I am Nigerian-American. I was born and raised in America, however, both of my parents are Nigerian. As my parents assimilated to the American culture, we were brought up in a predominantly Caucasian neighborhood. The majority of my friends were of that race and as I continued throughout junior high and high school I tried to diversify my circle of friends, however, I yearned for more African-American girlfriends.

As I entered into my Freshman year of college I had heard about sororities that fostered young African-American women. Eager to learn more about it, I went up to the Greek Offices. When I went up to the Greek Offices toward the Non-Panhellenic area, no one was there. However, across the way in the Panhellenic area stood a tall, black woman. She said, "Can I help you?" I then let her know I was looking to talk to her about joining a historically black sorority. The tall, black girl further introduced herself as Kiara and politely asked if there was a reason why I wanted to join the all black sorority. I gave her my spiel that I explained earlier and she then stopped me and said, "Karen, I am not in an all black sorority and I have made some amazing relationships with women who I call my sisters. We have all races in my sorority, even black women. At the end of the day, it shouldn't be about the race of girls, it should be about where you feel most comfortable ". Kiara had a great point. To be honest, I have never defined my life by race. For those who know me, I have a diverse circle and seek to learn the person BEHIND the skin shade. While I do believe that there are some things similar races can vibe on, I prefer to surround myself among all walks and colors of life. Kiara then suggested that I participate in the Panhellenic recruitment which happened to be that weekend--I had nothing to lose as the historically black sororities were not looking for new members until the next semester anyway. I figured if the recruitment that weekend didn't work out, I still had the opportunity to check out the historically black sororities. Long story short, going through recruitment that weekend was the best decision of my life. I met women who I could relate to on all levels and they helped to shape my positive college experience. From holding various roles like Recruitment Chair, Social Chair, and choreographing fun philanthropic dances, I was able to practice my leadership skills and overall have a blast in college. Above all else, without my sorority experience I would not have met Sakura and Ali to start The Sorority Secrets. For that, I am grateful.
